R&D testing and validation

It is widely held that 80 percent of the flaws in products occur during product development and 20 percent during production. This makes testing and design for testability extremely important already during the product development stage. Automated testing performed during product development makes the product development faster and of higher quality, and results in a product that is readier when it goes into production.

Getting it right

Close to half the time spent on product development is used to test whether the device works in the desired manner and that it fulfills the specifications set for it. This is an important stage and makes financial sense, as the later any flaws in a product development project are found, the costlier it will be for the company – not to mention the harm that may be caused to the company’s reputation if a flaw appears only when the device is already in the hands of the end customer.

Design for testing (DFT) as part of product development

To ensure the quality and correct operation of electronic products you have to be able to test them both during R&D phase (design verification) and later in production (production testing). To make sure the required testing is possible to do, and preferably even easy to do, you have to take the testing requirements into account when the product is being developed. This is called design for testability or design for testing (DFT).
