Our position in the growing Chinese markets provides us with a unique competitive advantage to help our customers quickly access cost benefits and minimize the risks linked to the availability of work force,” says VP Riku Riikonen, General Manager, Etteplan China.

Automated dispensing of medicines will improve patient safety in hospitals

Automated dispensing of medicines will improve patient safety in hospitals

Published: 2014-02-28 07:01:00

- Etteplan is designing an innovative medical automation system for Newico for tracking a pharmaceutical product all the way from the factory to the patient. The first part of the system will be introduced at Kuopio University Hospital in Finland in 2015.

In the not-too-distant future, the storage and dosage of medication at the hospital will be assisted by robots. Kuopio University Hospital has placed an order with Newico for an automation solution for the storage and dispensing of medicine to patients. Etteplan is Newico’s main engineering partner in developing the automation system.

The system will be the first in the world capable of tracking medicine and its dispensation from factory to patient. According to the new system, the hospital pharmacy’s storage robot will receive the medicines from the wholesaler and put them on the shelves. The storage robot will also collect and pack the medicine destined for the hospital wards. In the wards, medicines will be managed, dosed and dispensed using an automated system that is integrated with patient data systems. The automated system will also provide guidance to nursing staff and record the procedures carried out by the nurses.

- Automated medicine dispensation will be the biggest change seen in hospitals in decades and, in our view, it will be a key tool for hospitals as the population ages and they are forced to tighten their purse strings. But an even more important benefit of the system will be improved patient safety, says Toivo Naaranlahti, hospital pharmacist and head of the pharmacy department at Kuopio University Hospital.

- The starting point for developing the system is to design the medicine dispensing process from the point of view of patient safety. Every year, manual storage and dispensation of medicine leads to hundreds of errors that put patients’ lives in jeopardy. The new system minimizes human error in medicine dispensing and frees up nursing staff so they can focus on patient care, says Jukka Mauranen, Key Account Manager at Newico.

Published: 2013-08-23 09:05:00

- AW-Energy’s new testing facility enables full-scale dry testing of wave energy units. The testing facility will be used to perform long-term and realistic tests in laboratory conditions. The facility, to be built in Finland, is the only one of its kind in Europe and marks a significant step in the industrialization of wave energy.

AW-Energy Oy has commissioned Etteplan to handle the engineering design for a testing facility for its patented WaveRoller technology. The WaveRoller converts the surge phenomenon that takes place on the shoreline into electrical energy. Finnish-based AW-Energy is a world-leading company in the development of wave energy.

Etteplan will be in charge of the engineering for the entire testing facility, including electrical, automation, mechanical, hydraulics and HVAC, as well as technical calculations. AW-Energy’s new facility has many benefits: it allows long-term testing of wave energy units to recreate realistic conditions. This makes it possible to test extreme waves, in which substantial mechanical energy results in major electrical power.

“Construction of the new testing facility is a natural step towards industrializing WaveRoller technology, and it complements our pilot power plant in Portugal. We chose Etteplan as our engineering partner because with them we can get all the know-how we need from one place. In addition, Etteplan has extensive experience in developing technology based on renewable forms of energy,” says Petri Liukkonen, AW-Energy’s Vice President, Industrialization.

“Engineering this testing facility is significant recognition of Etteplan’s technology competence and ability to deliver complete solutions. In addition, we are extremely proud to be part of developing top-notch Finnish environmental technology and bringing it to the world stage,” says Iiro Aalto, Regional Manager from Etteplan.

Fortum Värme outsources technical documentation to Etteplan

Published: 2013-06-27 06:00:00

Etteplan has signed a three-year outsourcing agreement with Fortum Värme that covers the unit responsible for technical documentation. The contract signing was preceded by a tender process. AB Fortum Värme is a Fortum company, owned jointly with the City of Stockholm.

The agreement will come into force as of July 1, 2013 and comprises the documentation for all of Fortum Värme’s plants in the Stockholm region. The agreement affects twelve of Fortum Värme’s employees and seven subcontractors.

“The reason behind the outsourcing was the need to develop the technical documentation function. As there are service providers, whose core business is technical product information, it was natural to consider outsourcing as an alternative.

While evaluating different suppliers we placed great importance on competence and experience in technical documentation as well as on commitment to develop the documentation function. It was equally important that the service provider is an attractive employer to the employees concerned,” says Anders Egelrud, Managing Director at Fortum Värme.

Etteplan is specialized in services taking overall responsibility of the customer’s functions such as technical documentation. “Fortum Värme’s business suits well to our competencies and an outsourcing agreement in this area is in line with Etteplan’s strategy. Etteplan awarded for innovation

Etteplan awarded for innovation

Unique HyperSIS system significantly speeds up maintenance and service work

Etteplan Oyj’s investment in innovation has been recognized by the Dutch Association for Service Management (NVSM). The association’s first ever Innovation Award was given to Etteplan’s Dutch subsidiary Etteplan | Tedopres for its HyperSIS Service Information System.

“The NVSM award clearly shows that we have managed to foster a culture of innovation throughout our whole organization ‒ developing service solutions that go beyond traditional engineering design services,” says Etteplan’s President and CEO Juha Näkki.

HyperSIS was awarded particularly for its innovative use of existing technologies.

“The strength of HyperSIS is that it combines technologies like QR code scanning, augmented reality and visual search using 3D illustrations to allow service engineers to find the information they need to do maintenance tasks as efficiently as possible,“ says Roeland Staal, chairman of NVSM.

The importance of service business for equipment and machinery manufacturers is growing constantly. Improved efficiency in machine service can bring considerable savings in both time and money for any company committed to developing its service business.

“Studies have shown that with a traditional manual, even downloaded into a laptop, the service engineer uses 25‒50% of his time during one assignment to find the right information. In a company with hundreds or thousands of service engineers, cutting this time is essential,” says Berry Braster, Etteplan | Tedopres’s sales and marketing director.

The unique HyperSIS product is a tablet application, which gives service engineers quick and easy access to up-to-date maintenance information. Ease of use is facilitated by information structured in data modules and maintained in a content management system.

“For example, a service engineer can scan the QR code from a machine and get all the relevant information about that particular, tailored machine. With the help of HyperSIS, he can troubleshoot the system and even order a new part, if necessary.”

HyperSIS has been released earlier this year, with the first implementations under way in Finland and the Netherlands. The customers involved in the pilot projects are mostly engineering works.

Etteplan acquired the Dutch Tedopres in 2012 to strengthen its technical product information services offering.

Etteplan developing a control system for Chalmers’ biogas reactor

Etteplan developing a control system for Chalmers’ biogas reactor

Published: 2013-01-30 14:00:00

- The control system helps the Biomass Gasification Group at the Chalmers Energy Conversion Division to solve major challenges regarding the operation stability of a tar cleaning reactor system.

Etteplan, specialists in industrial equipment engineering and technical product information solutions, has been commissioned by the department of Energy and Environment of Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, to design a new control system for Chalmers’ innovative biogas reactor.

Chalmers University is conducting research concerning the conversion of biomass into a biogas mixture and is developing a promising technique for catalytic gas cleaning of the tars produced in the gasification step. Current research has been focusing on the tar cleaning process to overcome challenges hindering commercial deployment of the technology.

Etteplan has helped Chalmers University replace the current control system of the reactor with new software and implement control functions to better regulate pressure fluctuations in the reactor. Such a control system has a significant role in maintaining different pressures in the two reactors, a key issue to avoid occurrence of tars in inappropriate sections of the reactor setup.

Etteplan’s solution for Chalmers utilizes Etteplan’s extensive expertise in advanced climate technologies. The company’s engineering unit in Gothenburg is specialized in developing and testing climate technologies and control systems for applications that meet the highest requirements for product safety and performance under most severe conditions.

“We chose Etteplan as a supplier of the new control system, because of their insight and ability to come up with solutions that fitted to our needs. Etteplan’s contribution to improve the process stability in our tar cracking reactor is expected to facilitate the operation of the reactor considerably”, says Nicolas Berguerand, Ph.D, Assistant Professor at Chalmers University of Technology.

Published: 2012-08-29 09:00:00

- Vacon is making use of Etteplan’s advanced methods to ensure that the company’s high-quality technical product information solutions stand out in its global operations.

Vacon Plc, a Finnish company specialized in the design and manufacture of AC drives, is transferring a considerable part of the production and development of its technical product information over to Etteplan Oyj. Etteplan is one of the largest and most advanced companies in Europe specializing in the methods, products and services surrounding technical product information. Etteplan’s Managed Service will be supplied to Vacon from the company’s offices in Finland and China.

“Technical product information is an essential part of our products and services, which makes it an important development area in our company. Etteplan has the market’s most advanced technical product information solutions, and these will help us to stand out in the markets and meet our customers’ highest quality and security standards,” says Heikki Hiltunen, Executive Vice President of Market Operations at Vacon.

Vacon’s technical documentation will make use of Simplified Technical English (STE) and Simplified Technical Illustrations (STI), two of the leading methods of documentation in producing standardized texts and illustrations. The use of STE results in clear and easy-to-understand technical texts. Illustrations using the STI method are re-usable, which increases the opportunities for using these versatile illustrations in a variety of materials. Thanks to these two methods, the quality and re-usability of technical texts improve, while the reduced volume of text results in decreased printing, translation and other production costs.

Technical product information refers to documentation produced for all stages of the life cycle of a device, such as installation guides, spare parts catalogues, and instruction booklets and training material. Technical product information has a significant impact on how the end-user experiences the device and on product safety.

Renewed standard for medical equipment in June

Renewed standard for medical equipment in June

Published: 2012-05-09 09:00:00

The compliance costs can increase considerably if not enough resources are allocated to the development project

Business implications of the new 3rd edition of the medical electrical equipment standard EN 0601-1 are not widely known in the industry. A thorough regulatory plan and gap analysis to comply with the renewed standard can save medical device manufacturers time and money according to Etteplan’s experts. Etteplan is one of the largest companies providing engineering design services in the Nordics and expert in the area of medical technology.

The renewed standard contains hundreds of new requirements. Compliance to these can be a daunting task for many companies involved in the development and manufacturing of medical equipment. The new edition has implications on both the product development process as well on the way how the regulatory process is conducted. The risks must be assessed more holistically than before during the entire product development process. Also the amount of needed documentation will grow.

The situation is made more complicated by the fact that different countries adopt and require standard compliance in different stages of the development process and product specific standards for certain equipment have their own transition dates. As a result companies are facing a complex multidimensional compliance matrix to navigate through involving a lot of time, resources and interdisciplinary competences.

“A well prepared regulatory plan and a gap analysis are essential if you want to keep your costs down and shorten the time-to-market. To take all necessary considerations into account and prioritize the tasks requires a project team which has multi-disciplinary expertise. The team has a very important role to ensure success of the product development project”, advices Micael Johansson, a regulatory expert in Etteplan’s med tech team.

Etteplan is co-organizing a seminar on the renewed standards in Stockholm on May 10, 2012: ”Nya standards för medicinteknik från 1 juni; Hur påverkas ert företag?” For more information on the seminar, please visit: http://www.swedishmedtech.se/.

Etteplan becomes European pioneer in technical product information

Etteplan becomes European pioneer in technical product information

Published: 2012-03-12 08:00:00

An acquisition will transfer the Dutch Tedopres International’s innovative methods and technology for the content production and distribution of technical product information to Etteplan.

Thanks to the acquisition, Etteplan Oyj’s service offering in technical product information will be expanded by ground-breaking methods and technologies. With this transaction Etteplan becomes a major pioneer and key player in the industry in Europe, with more than 300 specialists in the field.

Tedopres International BV is an internationally recognized company and the leading developer of methods and software for Simplified Technical English (STE) and Simplified Technical Illustrations (STI). The company’s customers include Boeing, John Deere, Rolls-Royce, Electrolux, Sony and Philips.

STE was originally developed for the needs of the aerospace industry. Several international companies are increasingly adopting STE in their technical documentation.

STE’s writing rules and vocabulary produce a simple, easily understandable English text. The use of STE will improve the readability, usability and quality of technical documents, such as operating and maintenance instructions and other manuals. Other benefits include improved product safety for the user, thanks to the elimination of misunderstandings and ambiguities. The amount of text is significantly lower in materials produced by the STE principle, which can decrease translation and printing costs by up to 30 to 40 percent. More efficient production and distribution processes also enable quicker market entry for the product.

Another innovative solution in the company’s portfolio is an illustration method based on the Simplified Technical Illustrations principle. The method utilizes 3D images created during the customer’s product development and engineering processes and the information contained in them for the production of technical product information.

In addition to conventional media, Tedopres’s technologies make it possible to distribute technical product information for example via tablet computers and voice applications. Tedopres has supplied the Netherlands Ministry of Defense with an application that displays the virtual maintenance instructions of equipment from a computer to a head-mounted display. More information about Tedopres and the methods and technologies developed by the company is available via this video link or on the company’s websites www.tedopres.com and www.simplifiedenglish.net.

“Etteplan’s customers will now enjoy even more wide-ranging services,” says Juha Näkki, President and CEO of Etteplan. “With STE, we can accomplish major cost savings for our customers thanks to content that is more concise and of a higher quality. Furthermore, Tedopres’s innovative technology for the distribution of product information in mobile terminal devices will bring the possibilities to utilize technical product information to a new level in our customer industries.”

“I’m confident that Tedopres has found a new owner with whom Tedopres can continue to grow and prosper. Together Etteplan and Tedopres have all the possibilities to lead the way in the development of innovative technical product information solutions”, states André N. Verduijn, Founder and Director of Tedopres.
