Etteplan, an engineering company that specializes in industrial engineering services, embedded systems, IoT (internet of things) and technical documentation, was a winner in the first-ever Mechathon, a mechanics competition organized on the 12th and 13th of May 2017 in Tampere. The competition was organized by the elevator company KONE and the Tampere University of Applied Sciences.

Mechathon included, in addition to adult students from the Tampere University of Applied Sciences, four companies that were tasked with solving one of five technical challenges related to KONE’s elevator technology. The winning team had to present an innovative solution with novelty value and commercial potential.

Etteplan’s team solved a mechanical challenge related to the elevator guide rail. The solution proved to be a winner because the team created an entirely new concept that included a solution to four of the five challenges set up by KONE.

Etteplan’s winning team included three mechanical engineers, Tomi Martikainen, Teemu Hännikäinen and Jani Renvall, from Etteplan’s Tampere and Hyvinkää offices, as well as two adult students from the Tampere University of Applied Sciences.

-        We chose Etteplan as the winner because the team set out to solve the challenge from a totally new perspective. In addition, their solution was innovative and technically impressive. We will definitely look into our possibilities for commercializing the solution. Our warmest congratulations to the Etteplan team, says Innovation Manager Ari Hänninen from KONE.

-        We are happy and proud of the Etteplan team’s success. The team showed how our brand promise ‘Engineering with a difference’, works in practice,” says Veikko Lamminen, SVP, Operations Finland.
