Etteplan’s Oulu office designed the modernization of the automation system for level 2 of the blast furnace for Fundia Wire Oy AB’s Koverhar Steel Works. The project also involved extending the basic automation for a blast furnace. Two new process stations were added to the system as well as a PC workstation complete with a database. The assignment included programming and data bus engineering.

The project was carried out alongside projects in Mexico (Sicartsa) and Canada (Stelco). The objective was to create a new system that combines supervisory, expert and neural systems.

The Koverhar system differs from those delivered earlier in that the blast furnace has no separate level 2 automation system; rather, this system is used for operating the blast furnace.

The connection comprises data retrieval from a sub-station, entering data into the substation, the database interface and software management. The project was completed on schedule in 2001.
