Kaisu Palomäki

Senior technical writer, Finland

“I have a Master’s degree in German language and translation studies from the University of Tampere. Midway through my studies, I saw an ad on a noticeboard at the university about the Technical Communications Programme and got immediately interested. These studies are only organized every other year, so, while I waited for the next start programme to start, I complemented my studies with English philology minor studies, as per the admission criteria. I was admitted to the study programme in 2012. The one-year study programme included, for instance, structured documentation, programming and technical illustrating. As part of my studies, I completed an internship in Corporate Communications at Cargotec, after which I worked as a technical writer at Lionbridge. In 2014, I started as a technical writer at Etteplan.

After starting to work in the field of technical communications, I realized the extent of the information and skill set I had received from the technical communications studies. Learning to use the most wide-spread tools in the industry was especially emphasized in the studies. In addition, we were introduced to a great network of professionals in the field. I am curious by nature and I do not hesitate to ask if something is unclear. This has helped me to find great practical solutions and develop my own ways of working. Excellent customer service skills have also helped me in my work since the majority of the work consists of discussions with different kinds of subject-matter experts.

At Etteplan, I have worked in positions of responsibility in around ten different customer projects. My professionalism has developed, and I feel that I am learning something new every day. Currently, I am on secondment to an extremely interesting product development project, in which I can create all the documentation practices and documentation from scratch. At the same time, I am widening my skill set by completing Specialization studies in Technical Communications at the University of Tampere. Continuous studying and learning suit me well because, by applying new ideas, I find new enthusiasm and motivation for my work."
