Manufacturing drawings fast and cost-effectively from China

The Switch saw a need to flexibly and cost-effectively increase its engineering capacity. The company needed manufacturing drawings for a new electrical motor fast and cost-effectively. The drawings had to meet European quality standards, but at the same time enable the manufacture of the electrical parts outside of Europe.

Cost-efficient manufacturing drawings

The Switch, which is owned by Yaskawa Electric Corporation, manufactures rotating electrical machines and full power converters for the renewable energy market and various industrial applications. Efficiency, performance, power density and size are important criteria in all of its customer applications. The Switch’s main business areas are wind power, marine drives and high-speed industrial motor drives. The company’s marine electrical drives consist of propulsion motors and shaft generators. Its high-speed industrial motors offer a gearless solution for numerous applications.

The Switch saw a need to flexibly and cost-effectively increase its engineering capacity. The company needed manufacturing drawings for a new electrical machine fast and cost-effectively. The drawings had to meet European quality standards, but at the same time enable the manufacture of the electrical parts outside of Europe. Due to the tight schedule and to increase cost-effectiveness, The Switch turned to Etteplan for their manufacturing drawings.

“We received the manufacturing drawings from Etteplan very quickly and flexibly. The cost savings we gained were significant, thanks to Etteplan’s service model in China. Buying the manufacturing drawings as a service allowed us to stick to our budget and schedule, not to mention gave us the opportunity to focus on our concurrent projects,” says Engineering Manager Tomi Knuutila of The Switch.

Purchasing manufacturing drawings as a service saves time

The manufacturing drawing solution offered by Etteplan was realized using the Etteplan DRAW service from its China office. With Etteplan DRAW, Etteplan takes care of the production and quality of the customer’s manufacturing drawings, in accordance with the requirements specified by the customer. The manufacturing drawings were created out of Etteplan’s China unit, based on Finnish 3D models. Etteplan examined the finished drawings in The Switch’s PDM system before they were approved and sent to production.
