Simplified Technical English (STE) is the most established specification for Controlled Language. Controlled language uses writing rules and standardized vocabulary to simplify sentence structure.STE aims at avoiding misinterpretations: the method is based on the notion that one word can have only one meaning. ASD Simplified Technical English (ASD-STE100, former AECMA Simplified Technical English) is an international specification for writing technical documentation created in the 80’s for the aerospace and defense industries. Since then the specification has been widely applied by many other industries such as medical, automotive, machinery, IT and telecommunication. Many companies use the STE specification as a basis for their controlled language efforts and customize it where necessary, resulting in their own controlled language standard.
