Digital driver training: Multilingual e-learning for international rollout

Our client, the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles, particularly trucks and buses, commissioned Etteplan to develop a multilingual e-learning program to train drivers and sales teams on a new control unit. The goal was to efficiently prepare hundreds of people worldwide in five languages for the subsequent face-to-face training sessions.

The e-learning should integrate seamlessly into the existing learning management system (LMS) while offering a modern, interactive learning experience. Thanks to Etteplan's many years of experience in creating technical documentation for the vehicle, the project was successfully implemented in close cooperation with our customer: from the didactic concept and media-appropriate preparation to the integration of AI-supported speech synthesis and the implementation of international tests.

Project Overview

The tasks in the project:

  • Develop a multilingual, interactive e-learning module in Articulate
  • Orientation towards the customer's LMS structures
  • Prepare content from existing operating instructions
  • Didactic preparation for a digital training format

Etteplan developed interactive, multilingual e-learning in Articulate that could be seamlessly integrated into the customer's existing learning management system. The content was based on existing operating instructions and was prepared in a didactic manner. To save costs, AI-generated voices were used for the first time, which were adapted linguistically and stylistically. The visually designed training course with animations and interactive tasks was first tested in German and then localized into four other languages.

Implementation

  • Development of modular e-learning with interactive tasks, animations, and visual explanations
  • Use of AI-generated voices (including linguistic and stylistic adaptation to the LMS)
  • Inclusion of correct pronunciation of technical terms and brand names
  • Conducting a test phase with German-speaking users
  • Localization into four additional languages
  • Close coordination with the customer to ensure user-friendliness and technical integration

The E-learning enables efficient and scalable training for hundreds of users worldwide – regardless of location and language. Digital preparation for classroom training saves time and resources. At the same time, the training supports the international train-the-trainer concept and ensures consistent communication of the new operating concept in the cab. The integration of AI voices reduces production costs without compromising quality. Thanks to its modular structure, the e-learning program can be flexibly updated and adapted to further developments in the user interface.

Added value

  • Efficiency: Over 800 drivers have already been trained in advance, saving time and resources in face-to-face training
  • Scalability: E-learning supports the train-the-trainer concept and enables international, standardized training
  • Future-proof: Thanks to its modular structure and close integration with the user interface, the training can be flexibly updated and expanded
  • Cost savings: The use of optimized AI voices has reduced production costs without compromising on quality

The strategic value of the project for our customer

Without the e-learning project, our client would have had to rely on traditional training methods, which involve significantly higher organizational and financial costs. Training so many participants in different countries and languages would have required face-to-face training, which is logistically complex, time-consuming, and costly. In addition, it would have been difficult to ensure uniform communication of the new operating concept. The international scaling of the training, especially within the framework of the train-the-trainer concept, would have been significantly slower and less consistent. Without a digital format, the ability to flexibly update content and adapt it to new software versions of the interface would also have been severely limited.

How you too can benefit from scalable, digital training

  • Scalable training worldwide

Companies with internationally distributed target groups can use multilingual e-learning to convey training content efficiently and consistently—regardless of time and place.

  • Cost and resource savings

The use of AI voices and digital learning formats significantly reduces production and travel costs compared to traditional face-to-face training.

  • Future-proof knowledge transfer

Digital training courses can be flexibly updated and adapted to new products, software versions, or regulatory requirements—ideal for dynamic industries.
