Using Ansys Simulation to Enable First-Time-Right High-Speed PCB Design: How Etteplan helped push the limits of optoelectronic connectivity
Phanofi is a Danish company dedicated to transforming the landscape of data communication. They specialize in bridging the gap between photonics and electronics – enabling the seamless, high-speed signal exchange that modern AI-driven data centres depend on. As demand for faster connectivity accelerates, Phanofi is tackling one of the field’s hardest engineering problems: converting data at speeds that push the physical limits of electronics.
The project in a nutshell
Challenge
Design a PCB for an optoelectrical conversion chip capable of operating at up to 200 Gbit/s.
Solutions and Services
3D electromagnetic simulation using the advanced Ansys electronic design environment, delivered through Etteplan's partnership with EDRMedeso.
Added value
Completed the high-speed PCB design on the first attempt, eliminating redesign cycles, avoiding software license costs, and reducing time to commercialization.
Designing at the limits of signal speed
To bring their vision to life, Phanofi turned to Etteplan's expertise in high-speed electronics design and electromagnetic simulation. Rather than relying on simplified rules of thumb, Etteplan's specialists worked with Ansys simulation tools - provided and supported through EDRMedeso, Etteplan's dedicated simulation partner - to model exactly how high-speed signals would propagate through the PCB and where risks might arise.
"The simulation done by Etteplan's expert gave us clear feedback for improvements, and confidence that our design was going to work as expected. This helped us to finalise our high-speed PCB design more efficiently than we could have done on our own," Dagmawi Alemayehu Bekele, Co-founder & CTO of Phanofi ApS.

Simulation that accelerates project implementation
PhSimulation replaced the uncertainty of physical prototyping with data-driven insight. Design adjustments were made in the virtual environment quickly, without manufacturing risk, and with full understanding of the physics behind each decision. Etteplan's experts used the results not to produce reports, but to support dialogue: explaining electromagnetic behaviour in a way that directly informed Phanofi's engineering choices.
"Simulation simplifies understanding the electromagnetic effects of rapid signals on the circuit board. Thanks to this approach, Phanofi successfully achieved their high-speed PCB design on the first try - eliminating the need to hire a simulation specialist or invest in expensive software licenses," Jouni Karinen, Department Manager at Etteplan
The outcome was first-time-right delivery on a design challenge where redesigns are common and costly. For Phanofi, it meant faster progress toward commercialization and confidence that their solution meets the demands of tomorrow's data infrastructure.
